On the frontlines of environmental protection, glycoluril is quietly contributing in multiple ways. First, glycoluril itself can be directly used as a water treatment agent. By virtue of the abundant polar groups in its molecule, it exhibits good adsorption affinity for heavy metal ions in water bodies, enabling effective purification of polluted water sources.

Glycoluril derivatives are equally impressive. Tetramethylol glycoluril, produced by condensing glycoluril with formaldehyde, is an important additive for powder coatings and water-based paints. It can improve the degreasing hydrophilicity and adhesion of the coating while effectively reducing the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), thereby contributing to green coating processes. Furthermore, glycoluril can be used to produce environmentally friendly phosphonate corrosion inhibitors - these inhibitors not only offer excellent corrosion inhibition performance and good water resistance, but more crucially, they possess favorable biodegradability and do not persist in the environment after use.

In the agricultural sector, glycoluril has also found its niche: it can serve as a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer, reducing fertilizer loss and non-point source pollution by controlling the rate of nitrogen release. In the field of resins, eco-friendly resins made from glycoluril combine good physical properties with high biodegradability, thereby reducing the long-term burden of plastic waste on the environment right from the source. A small white molecule is practicing the principles of "green chemistry" across multiple domains.
